About the Director

Mr. Lawson

Welcome! I’m a second‑year music educator passionate about helping students find their unique voices through performance, creativity, and collaboration. My journey with music began as a small child, watching my dad play in bands and run a successful instrument repair business out of our garage. As I grew and began getting into music myself I was able to have experiences in ensembles, solo performance, and community music-making which revealed the transformative power of music. Those early influences inspired me to pursue formal training and practical teaching experience so I could strive to give students the same sense of belonging, confidence, and joy that music gave me.

In the classroom and rehearsal room, I emphasize musical excellence balanced with growth mindset and inclusivity. I design lessons and rehearsals that build technical skills like pitch, rhythm, tone, and musicianship, while also developing critical thinking, ensemble awareness, and leadership. My approach centers on high expectations paired with supportive, student-centered practices: clear goals, frequent formative feedback, and an emphasis on students to take ownership of their learning through peer leadership, sectionals, and student-led performances.

I believe music education should be accessible and relevant. I strive to incorporate diverse repertoire that reflects our students’ cultures and interests alongside canonical works that teach core skills. Performance opportunities are varied, concerts, community outreach, collaborative projects with other departments so students can experience the many ways music connects people. I also prioritize social-emotional learning: rehearsals are spaces where students practice teamwork, resilience, and effective communication.

Outside of school, I stay active in the broader musical community through continuing professional development, being in ensembles of my own such as the Voices of the Sound in Olympia,  attending workshops, and collaborating with local musicians. These experiences inform my teaching and help me bring fresh ideas into the program. As a relatively new teacher, I’m eager to learn, adapt, and grow alongside my students and colleagues. My goal as director is to cultivate a safe, challenging, and joyful musical environment where every student can thrive, discover their strengths, and leave more confident than when they arrived. I look forward to sharing music, building community, and making meaningful memories with our ensemble.
