WHAT IS A CAREER ACADEMY //

A Career Academy allows students to study a career pathway throughout their school day. It includes a specific instructional focus and has certain characteristics.

ACADEMY CHARACTERISTICS //

  • 9th Grade: Career exploration
  • 10th Grade: Guest speakers and industry-related field trips
  • 11th Grade: Job shadow experience
  • 12th Grade: Capstone Project including related work in the field

ACADEMY GOALS //

  • Link educational opportunities to real-life experiences
  • Create a strong alliance between education and industries
  • Develop a workforce for local careers

ACADEMY TERMS & DEFINITIONS //

Academy - A collection of courses organized into pathways that all have a common theme such as health science. Pathway - A sequence of courses take each year with a common theme. The Patient Care pathway in the Health Science Academy (HSA) is an example.

Project Based Learning (PBL) - PBL is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge (frompblworks.org).

Teaching through the lens or with the flavor of the academy - This refers to the practice of including real-world examples linking your content to an academy theme.
