Instrumental Ensembles

Shelton High School Bands performs high level music at the high school/college concert band literature level. With an understanding that a theoretical knowledge is primal in our craft, we study music theory alongside our repertoire. This is a three trimester class with 0.5 credits per trimester.


The performing ensembles at Shelton High School are year-long classes for students who have successfully completed course objectives for music classes meet Benchmark 3 of the Washington State Essential Learning Requirements. Focus in on intermediate level concert literature, with an emphasis on technique, music understanding, and performance. Their performance based classes (Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Ensembles) performances include 3 concerts in the evening (December, March and May) at the Chinook Music Educators Association Large Group Festival.Percussion Ensemble performs as a unit, as well as providing percussion to the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. Students participating in this part of the program receive 0.5 credits per year.

 

Concert Band


This ensemble focuses on individual instrument pedagogy through the practice and performance of traditional concert band repertoire. Students will increase their instrumental technical skills through the instruction of basic scales, music theory, and beginning composition. This class meets daily and performances at many events (both at home and across the state) are required as part of the curriculum. The Concert Band promotes community enrichment at SHS varsity football and basketball games, parades and concert venues throughout the Northwest. Traveling is a requirement of the course. This class has uniform requirements. Some after hour rehearsals and sectionals should be expected. Fundraising opportunities will be provided

Wind Ensemble

is an upper level ensemble that participation is based on auditions and the needs of the ensemble. ​This ensemble focuses on individual instrument pedagogy through the practice and performance of traditional concert band repertoire at an advanced level. Students will increase their instrumental technical skills through the instruction of basic scales, music theory, and beginning composition.

This class meets daily and performances at many events (both at home and across the state) are required as part of the curriculum.
